Help She Can’t Swim - “Are You Feeling Fashionable?”

Yesterday, I was reading an article in GQ about the new “middlebrow” and it made me so damn angry. There’s something about hip culture that’s so obsessed with not being normal, to revel in the kitsch because it’s “adorable”, poking fun of the lower class and engaging in classism without even realizing it, and to value a person’s worth because of the things that they enjoy. People like things! It’s called being human! These things don’t define traits like kindness or compassion!

Help She Can’t Swim seems to get it, which is funny because they were involved in the nonsense that is music culture. This song pokes fun at everything and everyone who is involved in the process of being cool. It’s sad that this band never got to be a big deal given how good this album is. You can hear their influence on the work of the much more well known Los Campesinos!, so if you’re a big fan of shouty British vocalists with uptempo music, you should definitely check out this album. Learn to love it and cry with me about how sad it is that we’ll never get to see them live. We are indeed sensitive youth.
