Okkervil River - “Wake and Be Fine”

Will Sheff is a musical orator, lyrical genius, and creative machine. He and the rest of the Okkervil River gang consistently produce quality music with rich lyrics. Their songs hit me on such a visceral level. At times I find that I can only fully appreciate their work when I feel as though I’ve hit rock bottom. It’s as though Sheff is able to vocalize my emotions better than myself. Listening to the band’s past albums has been a ritual, sure-fire way to tap into what makes me human. I Am Very Far’s lyrics lack the many literate elements that were present in previous albums, but they are still raw. Their emotive nature surely comes from the almost stream-of-consciousness approach Sheff took to writing them. So, my friends, I present to you a piece of musical literature that hopefully reminds you of how strong feelings are.
