This album was the soundtrack to my finals week during spring quarter, and it looks like it’s going to be the soundtrack to my finals week during fall quarter, too. There’s something calming about listening to “Generator ^ First Floor” while gazing at the Chicago skyline from the lake. It’s perfect for the times when I’m nostalgic and miss home.
The band says that the album was created from frontman Judah Dadone’s childhood memories and dream journaling. It tells the story of a young man who has fallen in love with the female ghost that haunts his childhood home. “Starring” is one of the more uppity tunes that showcases the band’s penchant for interesting instruments (like the glock and banjo) and talent for creating pop hooks.
Freelance Whales is touring the United States with another animal-in-name band, Miniature Tigers, right now. It’s sure to be a good time, and forget your friends if they hear the band name and tease you for being a hipster.
