we wasted an entire summer sitting in parking lots, unsure of what to do with ourselves because we were young and stupid and every cliché adjective you can think of. this one time, it was raining, and yr car had fogged up, so you cracked the windows slightly. i put the passenger seat down; lying there, i remember dreaming about how to get out of texas where i had already spent four years in the heat and the monotony. eventually, i fell asleep, tired from laughing with you, tired of hoping for a seemingly distant future. i spent a lot of that summer sleeping in the passenger’s seat with you at the wheel, so much that i memorized the rhythm of gears shifting and the smell of yr car. i love chicago, but the winter is long and i am already feeling as though i am very, very far from home.
